Ukraine
Year opened: 1999
After centuries of oppression under Communism, the economic and spiritual position of Ukraine is still improving. Suffering two artificial famines under Soviet rule and fighting in World War II led to the deaths of 16 million Ukrainians. Of the more than 45 million inhabitants residing currently, at least 29% live below the poverty line. Sex trafficking has become a tremendous problem for Ukrainian women sold into forced prostitution.
The Mission Society partners with Great Commission Ministries in Ukraine. These missionaries are involved in the city of Kiev through the Kiev Christian Academy, serving as teachers and as headmaster. In addition, these missionaries are involved in orphanage ministry and adopted one of their children from a local orphanage. They are also involved with Safe Haven International, a ministry to orphanage graduates. Another missionary served as one of the developers of the Life Skills Training Manual which is being used widely by training educators in Ukraine and Russia.
