Philippines
Year opened: 2009
The Mission Society reopened a field in the Philippines in 2009. The Philippines are inhabited by nearly one billion people. Thirty percent of those live below the poverty line. Eighty percent of Filipinos are Catholic, five percent are Muslim, and 2.8% are Evangelical.
A couple came to The Mission Society with a vision to minister to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). An OFW is a Filipino working and living abroad in order to earn money to send to his or her family back in the Philippines. There are more than 10 million Filipinos all over the world living in this capacity. Many of them are evangelical Christians and are living in countries where sending missionaries is difficult or impossible. The missionaries serving in the Philippines desire to work alongside the Filipino Church and train OFWs to share their faith in word and deed.
